‘Nightshade' is a strange word. When we first hear ‘nightshade vegetable', we tend to relate it with some unknown and enigmatic activities of night, related with spirit, fairies, or charms. But actually, nightshade vegetable has nothing to do with abstruse night fairies or magic. Nightshade vegetables are such a vegetable which is used for making herbal or different medicines. Basically nightshade plants are known for their ingredient chemicals, which are well known for their favorable effect on human health. But some chemicals behave as toxins and poisons in human bodies. Later, because of these toxins, we become allergic to these vegetables.

Why this name? Basically nightshade vegetable are called ‘nightshade' because, they tend to shade themselves at night, in order to defend themselves from predators like night birds, or insects. Effect of nightshade plants: nightshade plants have different effects for different people. Some people consider it very healthy. But some people develop an allergy when they eat these nightshade plants. The good effects are, for some people, it increases strength, stamina, endurance, beauty and memory. But in some cases, these plants show bad effects such as skin rash, stomach infection, eye or nose infection and other types of allergies.

Why most allergies occur from nightshade plants? Actually, nightshade plants contain some chemicals in them. In different human bodies, these chemicals behave differently. Some human bodies tend to bear the chemicals, but in some human bodies, the chemicals are regarded as harmful foreign bodies. People regularly eat nightshade vegetables like eggplant, goose berry, tomato etc. so that's why, most allergies occurs from nightshade plants. The nightshade vegetables and their effects: there are over 2000 categories of nightshade vegetables. Some vegetable are so common that we can never imagine of it being of a special category.

  1. White potato: this is indeed a very common name to all persons. Generally white potato is not that harmful, but in some cases it shows allergic aftereffects in human body.
  2. Tomato: it is hard to believe that tomato falls under a special nightshade category. But yes, tomato has a chemical called lipoprotein, which shows allergic result to some people.
  3. Eggplant: this one is another common name in nightshade category. To some people, it does show some allergic and unusual outcome.

  1. Mandrake: this name is only known to those people who are very much passionate about continental cuisine. Mandrake is used to some dishes but it gives some unusual aftermath when consumed in a regular manner.
  2. Belladonna: this name is popular among those people who are interested in different herbal medicines. Belladonna is a popular medicine to many diseases. But this one too is a nightshade vegetable. In special cases, it shows allergic reactions.
  3. Tomatillos: this is another uncommon name in the list of nightshade vegetables. Basically this one is used in salads rarely and in some dishes. This vegetable too possesses an allergic feature.
  4. Garden huckleberry: this name is only common to some European countries. This is also a nightshade vegetable and has some allergic characteristics.

Nightshade plants are a daily need to us and a daily food in our breakfast, lunch or dinner list. There are some names in the list, which we can't even imagine to be allergic. We should know the effects of these nightshade plants. It will help us to get rid of allergies and to posses a good health.
